Location of St. Clair

St. Clair is situated in the central part of Hamilton, just east downtown.

To the north, it is bordered by Main Street East, a prominent thoroughfare that runs through the heart of the city. To the south, the neighborhood extends roughly until Wentworth Street South.

To the east, St. Clair is typically defined by Wentworth Street South. Finally, to the west, the neighborhood is bordered by Sherman Avenue South.

REASON 1

Large beautiful homes. If we were comparing this area to Toronto, it has an Annex feel to it.

Because it’s an inner city neighbourhood, there will be some petty crime happening in the area.

Parks and green space. Beautiful and spacious Gage Park, the Escarpment- lots of places to enjoy the outdoors.

Some of the homes have fairly small lots.

Festivals and activities. There is usually something fun going on at Gage Park.

If you aren’t a big walker, you may find the hike to downtown a bit much. It’s about a 25 minute walk from Stinson and 35 from St Clair.

It’s walkable to some good restaurants and amenities. Not quite as convenient as some of the areas a bit further west, but still quite convenient.

As with most of the Hamilton lower city areas, some homes will have damp basements.

In the St. Clair area, you’ll find a variety of detached homes, ranging from large  to smaller bungalow-style residences. Among the larger homes, you will definitely come across multi-unit rental apartments, while others are intended for single-family occupancy.

Places of Interest

The St. Clair area offers a range of activities and attractions for residents.

Gage Park is a beautiful green space, with walking trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. 

The Escarpment is the backdrop for the area. If you’re looking for some exercise, climb the Wentworth Stairs – exercise and a gorgeous view.

The stairs have been closed for improvements – March 2023 and expected to reopen in October 2023.

Take a hike or go for a bike ride along the Bruce Trail, which runs through the escarpment and offers stunning views of the city and surrounding landscape.

Explore the vibrant art and cultural scene in the neighborhood. Visit the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology to learn about the city’s industrial history, or discover contemporary art at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

Another perk of living close to downtown Hamilton is the Art Crawl on James Street North, running on the second Friday of each month in the Summer.

One of the big pluses of having such a beautifully spacious park in the midst of your neighbourhood are the festivals held within it. 

Some examples of festivals that have been held at Gage Park:

  • It’s Your Festival, an annual multicultural festival held over the Canada Day long weekend. It features live performances, cultural exhibits, food vendors, artisans, and a fireworks display.
  • The Festival of Friends is one of Canada’s largest free outdoor music and arts festivals. It takes place over a weekend in August and showcases a diverse lineup of musical performances, art displays, craft vendors, food trucks, and activities for all ages.
  • Ribfest is an annual event that brings together rib vendors from across North America to showcase their barbecue skills. 
  • Winterfest, a family-oriented winter festival that celebrates the season. It includes activities such as ice skating, ice sculptures, live entertainment, and winter-themed games and crafts.

 

The Hamilton Farmers’ Market, is held in close proximity to St. Clair. Browse through a variety of vendors offering fresh produce, local products, baked goods, and more.

Tim Horton’s Field is within walking distance!
